Preventing Dementia

Hi Friends,

Most people believe that dementia affects only the older people, with half of those aged 85 and older having it. Yet, the National NeuroScience Institute in Singapore has noticed an increasing trend of early- onset dementia.  About 4,000 Singaporeans, some only in their forties, are being diagnosed with dementia. Many of these younger Singaporeans are still working when the disease kicks in, and have young families. Some of them are holding professional jobs.

This trend is especially worrying, as it insinuates that the disease seems to be at liberty to pick its target from a wide pool of audience. It does not matter if you are in your forties or eighties, if you are still gainfully employed or retired, nor if you are a white-collar or blue-collar worker.

In addition to the number of people living with early-onset dementia, the Straits Times (2018) reported about one in ten people in Singapore aged 60 and above has dementia. By 2030, this number is predicted to more than double to 103,000.
